Followers of differing divinities will have advantages and disadvantages against each other. The circle of divinities is shown above. For example, a follower of Targos will have an advantage when fighting a follower of Nallyssa. For more information and history of the gods, try researching them in the Academia.
In the future, players will have the option of following the god of Kaos. There is a temple currently under construction in the Dwarven city of Aghorin for followers of Kaos. How the Kaos divinity will factor into divinity bonuses and when it will be available is still unclear.
Here is a very incomplete list of NPC's (non-player characters, i.e. monsters) and the gods they follow. Leveling on a monster who follows the god that your god has power over will give you a bonus on attacks and you will gain more experience. For example, a follower of Alustria will do more damage when attacking Crabs on the island of Vetra, who follow Targos, than a follower of other gods. The same attack bonus also applies in Player versus Player battle.
Keep in mind also, that many NPC's have chosen not to follow a god and are therefore Neutral. All divinites will do about the same damage on these monsters. NPC's have also proven to be fickle creatures, and they may chose to follow a different god from time to time. (i.e., staff occasionally changes the divinity of certain monsters in an attempt to balance out the divinities.)
