RoK Troubleshooting Basics

With a variety of differences in operating systems and software configurations, users with the same problem may not be able to resolve it using the same solution. The advice here will apply to the majority of users who experience problems, and they should be attempted first. If the issue persists you are welcome to post asking for help either on the Realms of Kaos official Help forum, or on RoKWorld's Help forum. Many issues have already been addressed and resolved on these boards.

With the release of the Beta 2 client, system resources have became a higher demand for playing the game and running multiple game clients at once. Lack of available free resources can cause undesired outcomes when playing the game with more than one client open. Restarting and/or closing other running applications can improve system resources. Preventing unnecessary programs from running in the background can also improve system resources and help with installing problems. Try going through the System Configuration Utility (if applicable for your OS) and eliminate unneeded startup programs.

For users with older hardware and operating systems running into strange errors, it is recommended that you first try renaming the "Syndar" map cache folder before attempting to un-install the game. Doing so will make troubleshooting of the problem easier. If corrupted map files are the cause of your error, you may choose to simply delete the whole folder, or log into the game again after you have renamed the Syndar folder. Once you have logged in, move around the perimeter of the square in which the affected character first ran into the error. The game client will make a new Syndar folder, then simply copy all the map files from the newly made Syndar folder into your renamed folder and overwrite the corrupted map files. It is good to keep in mind that, although the Beta 2 release is very stable, there may be hidden problems that may still need to be addressed in the future.

The Ban Bug

If you are seeking assistance with the "You have been banned by an administrator" issue you are recommended to first write a detailed e-mail to Abuse at RealmsofKaos.com containing your character name(s) and, if you have one, a message board name. If you have any idea why or how you have been banned, it is to your best interests to not lie and simply apologize for the matter. Excuses no matter true or not do not void the fact that it was your responsibility to prevent others from abusing your characters. If you have no idea why you were banned, sincerely ask for the reason.

It is possible that you may just be affected by the "ban bug." Try to restart or reconnect a few times or uninstall and reinstall the game client. If that doesn't work, one known solution with a high success rate is formatting your computer. It is a hassle - the choice is yours.  Be sure to have good backups of your data before pursuing this resolution! Proceed to format as a last resort only if you have made sure with an admin that you were not banned for a reason related to abuse or violation of the TOS. Be patient in waiting for a reply; delays will surely happen. All I can say is good luck.

Uninstalling the Client : The cautious removal.

In many cases, the easiest option to resolve your problem is to uninstall and reinstall the RoK game client. If it comes this, the proper procedures tested to be safe for uninstalling the game client are as follows:

Before you attempt to uninstall the game, it is best to be sure that you have all your character names written down. If you wish to save your map files, even if the possibility that corrupted map files are the culprit of your error, you can copy the syndar folder from " .../bin/syndar " into another area of your hard drive for backup purposes. (where ... is the exact path in which you had installed the game to. ex: c:\kaos\bin\syndar)

For many users, downloading the complete installation file isn't a problem. Although some dialup users may run into simple line noise or may have a bad connection, causing pre-mature downloading and rendering the installation file useless. There are many download manager programs available in the market; many being free or no purchase obligations within private, non-commercial use. A popular download site is www.download.com. Enter in the search query "Getright". It is a very popular and user friendly program for managing downloads.

You should also have in your possession a backup copy of the game client. If you do not have it or are unsure of your current copy's integrity, you should get it again just in case. You can find them on the RoKWorld Downloads page or from the official RealmsofKaos Website. It is also recommended that you reboot your computer prior to reinstalling the game.

To begin the un-installation, Click your Start menu button - Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - locate and select Realms of Kaos - Then click the Remove button once you have selected the exact program you wish to uninstall. You will be prompted to finalize your decision. In certain cases, the uninstaller will ask if you wish to keep or delete certain files shared by other applications. It is best to keep the files if you do not understand what they are for.  It is always a good idea to restart after removing any software.

Another way to uninstall the game is to manually delete the Kaos folder the game is installed to. This has worked flawlessly for many users, though it may cause a registry linking issue for some users with a dated operating system.

Healthy Usage Tips

  1. Maintaining a clean and healthy registry will be worth the time. It may fix a variety of system or file link errors and in certain cases, even significantly boost system performance. Almost any registry cleaner with a backup option will do the job. Search Google for "registry cleaner."  It is recommended that you make a backup of your system registry file either manually or before cleansing.

  2. If you just had a system crash, it is recommended that you run Scandisk to check for file or folder corruptions. Bad clusters on your hard drive can cause undesired problems ahead. Scandisking is quick and should be performed on a regular basis.

  3. Running the Windows Defrag application once a week will guarantee your system's efficiency and may prevent many errors. Depending on your processor speed and hard disk size, running the full defragmentation process may take hours. It is recommended that you schedule to run defrag at least once a month as the longer you wait the more fragmented your files will become.

Runtime Errors: Trial and Error-ed. Revised for the Beta 2 game client.

  1. Runtime Error 30005:

Reinstalling the game should fix this error. (An issue usually only XP users have)

  2. Runtime Error 50003: Unexpected Error

First verify that you have Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher installed. (Windows XP comes with IE6 installed) You can check your version by opening Internet Explorer, clicking on Help and About Internet Explorer.

If you have IE6 you should try installing the most recent version of the Visual Basic runtime library. Click here to download the install file for the VB 6.0 service pack 6 runtime files from Microsoft.

  3. Runtime Error 5: Invalid Procedure Call Or Argument

Open up your Kaos.cfg file inside your game folder and make sure your in-game text buffer size under the line ";BUFFER SIZE (in Kbytes)" is set to at least 5 or above.

You can also try renaming the map cache folder "Syndar" to another name for now to see if that will temporarily fix this.

  4. Runtime Error 52: Bad File Name Or Number & Runtime Error 76

This is a skins-related issue. You are either missing skin files, have corrupted skin files, or you had installed the skins improperly. Make sure you have copied the custom skins file to the skins folder and open up kaos.cfg to make sure the file and path to the skin's name is correct.

  5. Runtime Error 53: File Not Found

This error is mainly image related. You either have one or more missing/corrupted image file within your game folder. The error may also notify you of which specific image file you need to replace. You can ask someone you truly trust to send you the missing file/s, but reinstalling will replace it for you. Also, you can download the updated images zip file Here which has been known to fix many of the Error 53 related problems

Another version of the "Error 53" people seem to get can be easily fixed by clearing your map cache or temporarily moving the .dat files out of your "...\bin\syndar" folder (where ... is the exact path in which you had installed the game to. ex: c:\kaos\bin\syndar).

  6. Runtime Error 55: File Already Open

This will be fixed once you have deleted Users.dat from within your game folder. If the file does not show up. Go into your windows explorer options and choose to show all known file types and show hidden files. Be sure to write down your character names by opening the Users.dat file with windows notepad.

  7. Runtime Error 6: Overflow & Runtime Error 9: Overflow

With the release of Beta 2, the overflow error when going into your CM house was fixed. Although some players may run into this error when traveling in a party during high lagtime. There are occurances in which going into dark areas without a lightsource will cause this error as well.

  8. Runtime Error 62: Input Past End Of File

Try runtime error 55's solution. Also, if you receive this error when going into a dark area without a lightsource, you can simply re-log into the game again.

  9. Runtime Error 7: Out of memory & My screen won't scroll problem.

Open up windows explorer and press F3 or choose the search function. Make sure the files riched32.dll and riched20.dll are in your system and copy down the exact location they are in. Obtain another copy of these files from a trusted friend with the same operating system as you or locate the newest version on the internet. Be cautious of where you obtain those files and simply overwrite the old ones. Depending on your operating system, replacing richtx32.ocx may also fix the error. These files can also be found on the RoKWorld Downloads Page.

  10. Runtime Error 75: File/Path Error

This is a rather dated error from alpha and beta 1. If you are receiving this error, you may want to download the newest game client in the downloads section of this website or from the official Realms Of Kaos site.

  11. Runtime Error 13: Type Mismatch

Players usually get this error when in the presence of heavy scrolling while playing the game. Dialup users are affected the most with this error. Re-sizing the game client, or taking items out of knapsacks while using more than one game client seems to be the cause for most players. Your affected character will be ghosted, and you should be able to log back in after a few minutes.

  12. When I start the game, the fonts are out of proportion or look odd

Go into your display properties by either right clicking on your wallpaper desktop and right click to choose properties or click your Start button - Settings - Control Panel - and then choose Display. From there, you are able to change resolution and color depth. Click the "Advanced" option and once inside, set the option to "use small fonts" instead of large fonts. Don't forget to reboot.

If the above fix does not help, you may be missing the font that the client uses to display the text on the buttons of the login screen and room names within the game.  That font is available for download on the RoKWorld Downloads page.
